Day 1 | Athens – Corinth canal – Ancient Corinth – Ancient Nemea and wineries – Nafplion
Departure for our tour of Corinth and Argolis. Our first stop is at the famous Corinth canal with the impressive vistas, an engineering marvel of the 19th century. We continue for our visit to Ancient Corinth, a city notorious in the ancient times for its wealth and importance due to the exploitation of the Isthmus by the same name. The remains of the ancient city range from the 7th century B.C. up till the Roman times.
We continue south for our visit to the wineries of Nemea, an ancient wine district, famous for its red wine from local varieties. The myth has it that when Heracles arrived in Nemea to kill the Nemea Lion and fulfill his first labor, the blood from his wounds imbued the ground and ever since only red wine comes out of the land, the blood of Heracles. Today local estates have revived the wine tradition of Nemea, cultivating the old indigenous varieties but also adding new ones. After a short visit to the site of Ancient Nemea we arrive at Palyvos estate for our first taste of local wines. We continue further to the heart of this ancient wine country to taste the wines of the Raptis estate with our lunch with local specialties. In the afternoon we arrive to Nafplion, the first capital of Greece, and for many the most beautiful and picturesque town of the country. Free evening to enjoy the many taverns, bars and cafes of this lively and artistic town.
Day 2 | Mycenae – Winery visit – Epidaurus – fresh fish lunch – Athens
After breakfast we visit the fabled Mycenae, the golden city of Agamemnon, the greatest city of the Mycenaean civilization recited by Homer in Iliad, a civilization that flourished over 3.000 years ago. After our visit to the archaeological site we continue to Domaine Skouras, for a taste of its wines with an assortment of cheeses and cold cuts. We take a route through the olive and orange groves of Argolis that leads us to the famous Theater of Epidaurus, still serving as an open air theater in the summer, attracting Greek and international stars. Take your chance to be an actor even just for an afternoon. We continue to the quiet picturesque seaside village and port of ancient Epidaurus to enjoy our fresh fish and seafood lunch by the sea.
