It was the year 490 BC when the original Marathon runner, Pheidippides, herald to the great Athenian victory against the Persians at the battle of Marathon, traversed the 42 kms separating the battlefield on the East coast of Athens from the city. His only word upon arriving in front of the anxious crowd, waiting news of the battle, was “Nenikikamen”, we won! Almost 2.500 years later the revival of his arduous run became the culminating event of the first Modern Olympics of 1896 and the most demanding sport of Athletics. The Athens Classic Marathon is organized since 1955 and in its current form from 1983. This year, on the event of the 32nd annual organization, it got renamed to the Athens Authentic Marathon, a just name for the first and authentic Marathon route.
